Twenty-five years is a long time for a record to be out of print, and Aphex Twin fans have felt every bit of it. Richard D. James’ Drukqs first landed in October 2001, a sprawling, restless double album that swings from delicate prepared-piano pieces to some of the most jagged drill-and-bass he’s ever put to tape. It’s the kind of record that splits opinion even among longtime fans, which is probably exactly how he likes it.
Now Warp Records is bringing it back on vinyl and CD, arriving October 30th. This reissue matters more than most. With Drukqs back in print, every Aphex Twin studio album is once again available on wax for the first time in years. That’s a big deal if you’ve spent any time hunting secondhand copies of this one, since it’s long been one of the tougher IDM titles to track down at a reasonable price.
If you’re newer to Aphex Twin and only know him from Selected Ambient Works or Richard D. James Album, Drukqs is a different animal. It’s longer, stranger, and more sprawling, moving from the gentle “Jynweythek” and “Avril 14th” (reportedly one of Kanye West’s most sampled pieces) into some genuinely chaotic breakbeat territory. It rewards patience and repeat listens more than almost anything else in his catalog.
We’ll have it priced at $49.99, and given how much of Aphex Twin’s back catalog has been drying up at shops around here, we don’t expect this one to sit on the shelf long once it lands.
