Leon Bridges has always had a gift for turning warmth into a whole atmosphere, and Happiness Anytime might be his most fully realized version of that yet. It’s his fifth studio album, and this time he’s teamed up with J. Lloyd and Lydia Kitto of Jungle to produce it, a pairing that makes a lot of sense once you hear the results.
The title works as both a mission statement and an invitation. This is music built to meet you wherever you are and carry you somewhere coastal and unhurried, the kind of record you put on and suddenly the room feels a little warmer. Bridges leaned hard into feeling, storytelling, and his own vocal performance while Kitto brought melodic intuition and harmonic detail, and Lloyd shaped the production and arrangements. What comes out the other side sounds less like a solo artist backed by collaborators and more like three musicians who found a shared vision together, pulling from Fela Kuti’s Afrobeat, Brazilian rhythms, soul, disco, and South American grooves along the way.
