Queens of the Stone Age don’t do things halfway, and their ninth studio album, Perfecth, is proof they still know how to surprise us. This one lands at a moment of hard-won clarity for the band. Nine songs, all circling different shapes of love: the kind that holds you together, the kind that wrecks you, and the kind that somehow finds its way back. It’s fearless and moody in the way QOTSA does best, but there’s a rawness here that feels new.
“Insignificant Other” is the record’s centerpiece, sprawling and a little supernatural. Then there’s “Mono,” which does something genuinely clever with the mix, sliding from mono to stereo and from tight, claustrophobic verses to something huge and orchestral. It’s the kind of production trick you don’t notice until it hits you, and then you can’t stop noticing it.
